This Teacher Guide includes sample rubrics for purposes of both ongoing assessments and evaluations. Teachers are encouraged to adapt these rubrics to suit their needs and the needs of students. These rubrics will support teachers as they provide students ongoing and descriptive feedback. Using a rubric can support students to better understand how to respond to feedback as they prepare for subsequent culminating tasks and activities.
Rubrics may be embedded within the content for assessment and evaluation tasks, where appropriate. For more information, please refer to the following Ministry resource: Growing Success: Assessment, Evaluation and Reporting in Ontario Schools. First Edition, Covering Grades 1 to 12, (2010)(Opens in a new window).
They may also be created within the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) to accompany a particular assignment. In addition, rubrics may be linked in the Assignment Tool within the VLE for students to review prior to submitting a task or assignment for evaluation.
The rubrics have been ordered from Level 4 to Level 1 so that students can aspire to achieve the Level 4 which is found in the first column.
All students require support, including explicit instruction, modelling, and deconstruction to effectively develop skills in self-assessment and peer assessment. Success criteria is used to support students in making judgments about the learning relative to the identified learning goal(s).
